Derek Merrin served in the Ohio House from 2016 to 2024. Before that he was mayor of Waterville and a city council member. He is a real estate investor and lost to Kaptur in 2024.
What they say they'll do
- Won a five-way GOP primary with 44%
- Says Kaptur has been in Washington too long
- Raised about $1.5 million by mid-2026
The tea ☕
- Ohio Republicans redrew the map in late 2025, and Trump would have carried the new district by about 11 points instead of 7. That made Kaptur's seat harder to hold.
- The GOP primary got heated. Merrin's rivals attacked Madison Sheahan over her time as a top ICE deputy under Kristi Noem. Merrin won anyway.
