Angie Nixon grew up in Jacksonville and was a single mom for 12 years. She worked for a labor union and ran a group that signs up new voters. She also opened a bookstore and coffee shop. She has been in the Florida House for 6 years, since 2020. In August 2026 she beat a much richer rival to win the Democratic nomination.

Ashley Moody is from Plant City, Florida. She was a federal prosecutor and then a judge for about 10 years. She was elected Florida's attorney general in 2018 and again in 2022. In January 2025 Governor DeSantis picked her to fill Marco Rubio's Senate seat when he became Secretary of State. This is her first time asking voters to elect her to the Senate.

The tea ☕

A leaked grand jury report said $10 million from a Medicaid settlement was wrongly sent to the Hope Florida Foundation and then to a political group. Moody was attorney general at the time and her office approved the deal. No one was charged, a court ordered the report erased in October, and Moody called the claims political and absurd.
In October 2026 Nixon said on CNN that she wants Moody 'locked up' over the Hope Florida money. Moody's campaign called that a communist playbook move and told her to run for office in Cuba.
Moody refused to debate Nixon. She said Nixon is a socialist and she would not give her a stage. Democrats held a 'Where is Ashley Moody?' event saying she dodges reporters and town halls.
Nixon joined the Democratic Socialists of America in June 2026. Moody calls her a socialist in ads. Nixon says she is not a socialist and does not want to defund police.
Nixon and state Democratic chair Nikki Fried had a shouting match on a call in August 2026 over the DSA. Nixon said the party had not helped her.
In April 2026 Nixon used a bullhorn on the Florida House floor to protest a new voting map. The House gave her its first reprimand in 20 years, and the next day she was arrested after a 5 hour sit-in at Governor DeSantis's office.
In 2020, as attorney general, Moody joined a lawsuit asking the Supreme Court to throw out the election results in four states Trump lost. The court refused to hear it.
