Who's running
Mary PeltolaD
Mary Peltola is Yup'ik and grew up fishing with her dad on the Kuskokwim River in rural Alaska. She served ten years in the Alaska House, from 1999 to 2009, and later ran a tribal fish commission. In 2022 she beat Sarah Palin to win Alaska's only U.S. House seat and became the first Alaska Native in Congress. She lost that seat in 2024 by about 2.6 points.
What they say they'll do
- She wants to end federal income tax for Alaskans who make under $92,000 a year.
- She wants to lower fuel and food costs in rural Alaska.
- She wants to protect salmon and limit trawler bycatch to help Alaska's fisheries.
- She wants term limits for Congress and a ban on members trading stocks.
Dan SullivanRIncumbent
Dan Sullivan was born in Ohio and went to Harvard and Georgetown. He was a Marine for more than 30 years, mostly in the Reserve, and retired as a colonel in 2024. He was Alaska's attorney general and its natural resources commissioner. He won his Senate seat in 2014 and again in 2020, so he has been a senator for almost 12 years. President Trump and Senator Lisa Murkowski back him.
What they say they'll do
- He wants an 'Alaska comeback' with more oil and gas drilling and a big natural gas pipeline.
- He wants to support the military and build more in the Arctic.
- He voted for the 2025 tax and spending law and says it cuts taxes for families and seniors.
- He opposes abortion except for rape, incest, or to save the mother's life.
The tea ☕
- In September 2026, the New York Times reported that former aides said Peltola had angry outbursts, used slurs, and once shoved an employee. Her campaign denied some claims and admitted others, saying she struggled with grief after her mother and husband died in 2023. Senator Lisa Murkowski, who backs Sullivan, called parts of the story 'inflammatory.'
- At the October 15 debate, Peltola read some answers from notes. Sullivan asked if she got the questions early. The moderators said no. Sullivan posted, 'You can't cue-card your way through the Senate.'
- At a September fisheries debate in Kodiak, Sullivan missed a yes-or-no paddle question, looked at Peltola's paddle, and copied her answer. The crowd laughed. Peltola posted the video with the words 'Happy to help, Dan.'
- A Peltola ad said Sullivan cast the deciding vote to keep the Epstein files hidden. FactCheck.org called that misleading. He blocked one amendment in September 2025, but in November 2025 he voted for the law that released the files.
- Sullivan's campaign said Peltola took more than $140,000 from Epstein 'associates' like Reid Hoffman. FactCheck.org said none of those donors has been accused of wrongdoing.
- At the final debate the moderators warned both candidates that microphones could be cut if they kept interrupting.
- A second man named Dan Sullivan, a retired teacher, sued to get on the ballot as a Republican and a judge let him run. Republicans worried voters might mix up the two Sullivans.
